At the Movieline Breakthrough Awards, three actresses who just missed being on my overall best dressed list for 2004 (coming in the next few days), let down the side and confirmed my instinct not to elevate them to turn the top five into a top ten.

Kerry Washington, in a cut on bias dress which flatters no one with hips, particularly not when they stand like she is there.

Rose Byrne resorts to a dress with both a floral pattern and lace cut-outs.

And Famke Janssen pairs super short and horizontal waves across the hips.

Of the others at the event, despite the general gushing over her this year, Sienna Miller never came close to making the best dressed list, and this is a perfect example of why.

Eva Longoria wears a dress in a similar shape to many she’s worn before, but she seems to know what works for her and the colours and accessories here are great.

Regina King in a short suit with sleeves that must be very annoying.

Angela Bassett wears heavy dark boots with a heavy dark outfit, which works so much better than pairing them with a light-weight dress as so many have been doing recently.

The colour was provided by Ananda Lewis in perky orange and Julie Ann Emery in super-bright pink.
